The Pillars of Creation, one of the many mysteries of space revealed by NASA's Hubble Telescope in 1995, exists in the Eagle Nebula which is approximately 7000 light years away from the Earth. The pillars appear to resemble stalagmites growing upward about 4 light years in length but are actually dust and gas particles in the process of forming new stars.
